In March 2025, genetic testing company 23andMe filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, raising significant concerns about the security and future use of customers' sensitive genetic data. This development has prompted various state attorneys general, including those from California and Georgia, to advise users to consider deleting their accounts and associated data to safeguard their privacy.
Steps to Delete Your 23andMe Data and Account:
Log into Your Account:
Visit 23andMe's website and sign in with your credentials.
Access Account Settings:
Click on your username or profile picture, typically located in the top-right corner.
Initiate Data Download (Optional but Recommended):
Scroll to the "23andMe Data" section.
Choose "Request Your Data" to download your genetic information and reports for personal records.
Delete Your Data and Account:
In the same "23andMe Data" section, click on "Delete Your Data and Close Account."
Follow the on-screen instructions to confirm the deletion process.
How to destroy your 23andMe test sample and revoke permission for your data to be used for research
If you previously opted to have your saliva sample and DNA stored by 23andMe, you can change this setting.
To revoke your permission, go into your 23andMe account settings page and then navigate to Preferences.
In addition, if you previously agreed to 23andMe and third-party researchers using your genetic data and sample for research, you can withdraw consent from the Research and Product Consents section in your account settings.
While you can reverse that consent, there’s no way for you to delete that information.
Important Considerations:
Data Deletion Scope: Deleting your account will remove your personal information and genetic data from 23andMe's active databases. However, some data may be retained as required by law or for regulatory purposes.
Sample Destruction: Ensure that your biological sample is also destroyed by explicitly requesting this during the account deletion process.
Processing Time: The deletion process begins immediately upon request but may take up to 30 days to complete.
Irreversibility: Once your data and account are deleted, this action cannot be undone. Ensure you have downloaded any information you wish to retain before proceeding.
Additional Resources:
23andMe Customer Care: For further assistance or inquiries, contact 23andMe's customer support via their Help Center.
State Attorney General Guidance: Refer to advisories from your state's attorney general for additional recommendations and information on your rights regarding genetic data privacy.
Taking proactive steps to delete your data and close your account can help mitigate potential risks associated with 23andMe's financial situation and ensure greater control over your personal genetic information. Once you have requested the deletion of your data, it’s important to check in with your family members and encourage them to do the same because it’s not just their DNA that’s at risk of sale — it also affects people they are related to.
